Bay Frog Open and Mid-Summer Classic Disc Golf in Erie this Weekend

The Erie Sports Commission will host two different types of golf events this weekend – the Annual Bay Frog Open charity event and the Professional Disc Golf Association sanctioned Mid-Summer Classic.

The Bay Frog Open, hosted by the Uncommon Grit Foundation, will take place Sunday and Monday. The Open creates awareness, patriotism and community while raising money to support the military, first responders, and their families.

The event begins Sunday with the Sporting Clay Shoot at 10 a.m. at Critter Path Sporting Clays in Waterford followed by a dinner and charity auction at the Kahwa Club. On Monday, the Kahkwa Club will host the Bay Frog Warrior Scramble Golf Outing starting at noon. This year’s Bay Frog Open will see appearances from Chicago Bears legend Jim McMahon, former Pittsburgh Penguins Greg Malone, Adam Hall and Hockey Hall of Famers Mark Reechi and Bryan Trottier.

The proceeds from the Bay Frog Open benefit the Uncommon Grit Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity founded by 24-year Navy SEAL veteran Darren McBurnett and his wife Kim, will be used to elevate the work of vetted nonprofits such as Pittsburgh Warriors, Leashes of Valor, One More Wave, Heart of a Lion Foundation, New York Hero’s Fund, Throw Away Dogs Project, Operation Healing Forces, C4 Foundation, and more. The UGF has supported the Pittsburgh Warriors and Malone Family Foundation with more than $200,000 this past year.

“We see ourselves as another dog in the fight,” said McBurnett. “My experience in the SEAL Teams and knowing how to uplift teammates and have each other’s backs has shown me that we are all better together.”

The Second Annual Mid-Summer Classic Disc Golf Tournament, hosted by the Lake Erie Disc Golf Club, takes place Sunday at Pleasant Ridge Disc Golf Course. The Mid-Summer Classic directly impacts competitor’s ranks in the Professional Disc Golf Association.

The tournament tees off at 9 a.m. and consists of a two-round featuring eight divisions of golfers from Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania.

“We are thrilled to be hosting the Second Annual Mid-Summer Classic Disc Golf Tournament,” said the President of the Lake Erie Disc Golf Club, Brandon Borgia. “We have eight divisions teeing, one professional division and seven amateur divisions ranging all the way to a 60+ age division.”
