Erie Scratch Classic Returns for Seventh Year

Friday Mar 1st, 2019

Erie, Pa: The Erie Scratch Classic will take place at Rolling Meadow Lanes for the seventh year March 2-3. More than 120 bowlers from the region and beyond are expected to compete for the $2,500 projected grand prize.

New to the tournament this year is a pre-tournament qualifier that will take place March 2 beginning at 9:30 p.m. While bowlers are not required to participate in the qualifier Saturday night, one out of four participants will earn a spot in the main event Sunday with the option to choose their shift time.

Any adult bowler is eligible to participate in both portions of the event, with children being approved on a case-by-case basis. Entry for the pre-tournament qualifier is $35, while those who do not qualify can compete in the main event for $100 per bowler.

The main event will take place Sunday, with the first shift beginning at 8:30 a.m. and the second shift at 12:30 p.m. Each competitor will bowl four games of qualifying. The top 24 bowlers after both shifts will advance to a tournament format, with the top eight receiving a bye in the first round. From there, matches will be decided by total pinfall after two games.

“We wanted to introduce a pre-tournament qualifier to the Erie Scratch Classic this year because it makes the tournament more accessible to a wider audience,” said Larry Klick, Erie Scratch Classic tournament director. “We want to encourage all levels of bowlers to come give the qualifier a shot and try to earn a chance to compete with the best that Erie has to offer.”

“It has been incredible to see the level of talent that the Erie Scratch Classic attracts each year, and now even more people will be given the opportunity to compete,” said Mark Jeanneret, executive director of the Erie Sports Commission. “We are proud that Erie has been able to host this event for seven years and we look forward to helping Larry and his team continue to find innovative ways to help grow this tournament for years to come.”
