Tuesday Nov 29th, 2016

Erie, PA: The Erie Sports Commission and the Stars and Stripes Gymnastics Invitational have been named in Sports Destination Management magazine’s Champions of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism for 2016.

The Stars and Stripes Gymnastics Invitational, which is held annually at the Bayfront Convention Center in January, and is hosted by Erie Gymnastics Center and the Erie Sports Commission, was responsible for nearly $1 million in economic impact on the Erie region in 2016. That event saw more than 1,500 athletes compete from 50 teams from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New York, Ohio, and Ontario. The event is the second largest gymnastics competition in Pennsylvania.

The 16th Annual Stars and Stripes Gymnastics Invitational will be held January 13-16, 2017.

Awards were given to those sports events that generated a significant amount of economic impact for their respective regions. Stars and Stripes was one of 15 events nationwide selected as a Champion in the Small Market category.

“We’re so proud to have been able to draw national attention to such an incredible local event through this award,” said Ron Sertz, Executive Director of the Erie Sports Commission. “The Stars and Stripes Gymnastics Invitational exceeds my expectations every year, growing in duration, participants, and impact. We are fortunate to have Doug Pershun of Erie Gymnastics Center working here in our community.”
