PA Western Bowling Sectional to be held March 18 at three Erie bowling alleys
Erie, PA: The Erie Sports Commission is pleased to announce the Special Olympics PA Western Bowling Sectional returns to Eastway Lanes, Westway Lanes and Greengarden Lanes on Saturday, March 18. Tournament organizers expect up to 325 athletes from all of the Western Counties in Pennsylvania to attend.
Winners of the tenpin tournament will have the chance to move on to the Special Olympics Pennsylvania State Summer Games in State College, Pa. The 2017 Summer Games are a qualifying event for athletes to represent the state of Pennsylvania at the Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle, Wash. in summer 2018.
Events are divided into three categories: individual, doubles and team bowling. Individual bowling includes singles, ramp unassisted bowl and ramp assisted bowl. Doubles and team bowling include male, female, mixed, unified sports male, unified sports female and unified sports mixed.
Athletes are grouped based on their age, gender and ability to create a fair playing field. Each competitor is awarded for his or her performance with a gold, silver or bronze medal for first through third place or a ribbon for fourth through eighth place.
“As one of the most popular events in the Special Olympics, bowling brings the entire community together and allows people with intellectual disabilities the chance to compete in a sport,” said Mike Ermer, Special Olympics Western Competition Director. “We are excited to partner with the Erie Sports Commission to support this wonderful event in Erie.”
“We are proud to have the opportunity to support another Special Olympics PA event,” said Ron Sertz, Executive Director of the Erie Sports Commission. “This event will bring bowlers and their families from all over the Western Pennsylvania region to Erie, and we are looking forward to welcoming them.”
